POETS ON POETRY

    This site includes a biography, poems, and recommended reading.
  • E.E. Cummings 2
    Encourage students to explore the various information and links on this Web site. Students can read or listen to some of the poems on this site and choose one that they might include in a unit called "Since Feeling Is First."
    • A link is provided to a Cummings gallery at the bottom of this page and students may find Cummings' paintings particularly interesting. However, note that some nudes are included in this on-line gallery-in the "Couples and Lovers" and "Nudes and Strippers" categories; you may want to direct students to the abstracts, landscapes, or portraits. If they are viewing the paintings, students should also read some of the information included with this link under the heading "Prospectus."
    • Students can choose one of Cummings paintings that they think works with the poem "Since Feeling Is First." You might discuss as a class how both Joni Mitchell and Cummings express themselves using both words and paint. Ask: Is a good poem just a painting with words? Is a good painting just a poem with colour and texture?

LYRIC POETRY

  • Wiseman Review
    This site includes a review of Wiseman's "Crossing the Salt Flats." Ask students to analysis what they've learned about Wiseman from this reviewer's comments.
  • Paul Grignon Artist
    Grignon's Homepage features a biography and samples of his work. Students can view the images and discuss how they think the Internet has helped artists to reach a broader audience. They can locate an image that might be suitable for illustrating another poem in the unit.
  • A Red, Red Rose Analysed
    This sited includes detailed criticism of "A Red, Red Rose." Have students select another Burns poem to personally critique.
  • Joan Besen of Prairie Oyster
    Students can read Prairie Oyster's story, along with band members comments.
  • Bob Hallett
    This site includes a biography of Bob Hallett, plus information on the band. Students will need to enter and search the site for these biographies. Students can search the Internet for other Canadian musicians who come from Newfoundland and Labrador.

    This site includes historical pictures and memorabilia regarding Frye's poem "Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep." Ask students to do further research into Margaret Schwarzkopf, the woman Frye wrote the poem for.

    This exhaustive site includes Shakespearean themes, analysis, essays, sources, key dates, plots, and glossary items. Students can choose a date during Shakespeare's career and do further research into that period on the Internet.

    Have students read the brief biography of Cope on this site. Students can comment on Cope's use of humour.

    This site includes photos, a biography, bibliography, and criticism links.

    This site includes a brief biography and awards list. Host a discussion in the classroom about the importance of a Writer's Union, such as the one Smith Krachun belongs to.

    Students can check this site for Layton's publication listings and critical materials. Students can investigate the well-known group of poets Layton was associated with in the 1940's, who battled romanticism in poetry.

  • Buffy Sainte-Marie
    This is Buffy Saint-Marie's personal site, containing a biography, art gallery, discography, and so on. Discuss the different forms of art Saint-Marie has used to express her artistic voice.
  • Sara Teasdale
    This site includes a biography and a selected bibliography. Encourage students to read the biography and consider how Teasdale's background influenced her poetry.
  • Robert Fulghum
    A 1997 article about Fulghum written by one of his former students. Ask students to write an essay about a teacher who greatly influenced their lives.
  • Charles Bukowski 1
    This site includes a biography and selected works. Students can read one other poem by this poet and compare it with "the laughing heart" in a short critical essay.

    This site includes a detailed biography, with links. Students can visit all three of these sites and compare how information is presented. Challenge students to visit the links on this site to study poets who influenced Eliot.
  • Emily Dickinson 1
    This is a rich site with many links. It opens to a literary/biographical criticism. Encourage students to read the article and explore the links.
  • Emily Dickinson 2
    This is another rich site, and includes many of her poems, and a detailed biography.
  • Emily Dickinson 3
    This site includes a very detailed biography and criticisms of Dickinson's work. Students can compare these sites and their information, and then write a Dickinson biography.

    This site is an extensive online list of criticisms, and includes a biography, bibliography, faq's, and a timeline. Encourage students to read several of the questions and answers and discuss Lawrence and his influences.

    Teacher resource site - including lesson plans. Ask students to review the information included about Angelou on this site and develop five questions about Angelou that they would like answered. They can search for answers on some of the linked sites.
  • Maya Angelou 2
    This site, developed by the University of Minnesota to represent "Voices from the Gaps, Women Writers of Color," includes a biography, bibliography, criticism of Angelou's works, and links to other sites. After students have read about Angelou, they could investigate the work and life of another writer on this site.
  • Margaret Atwood 1
    This is the "Atwood Society's" information site on the author, her life, and works. Students could compare this unofficial site to the one below.
  • Margaret Atwood 2
    This is Margaret Atwood's official site, maintained by her assistant; it includes her theories on writing, faq's, and other information.
  • Linda Pastan
    This site includes a brief biography and links to other sites with the text of her poems. Ask students to compare Pastan's work with Emily Dickinson, who she is often compared to.
  • Rembrandt Artist
    Students can visit this site to read Rembrandt's biography and view colour reproductions of his paintings. Ask them to identify one other painting they would have used to accompany the poem "Ethics."

    This site is divided into "By Keats" and "About Keats" and students could work in small groups to investigate either section.
